Even the Hard Stuff...

Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.” Revelation 1:3

For most of my adult life I have avoided the book of Revelation like the plague. Why? Because I was repeatedly told when I was little that it was a “tough” book, and that I should not read it because…(insert a variety of reasons here). Lately, however, I have been blessed to study and teach this book to the youth (high school and young adult ministry) at my church.

To be honest, it is one of those books that I have to “buckle up and put on my big girl boots on” in order to fully comprehend the message that God is communicating to us, His people. I mean I have to cross-reference Daniel, Ezekiel, Isaiah, Matthew, Luke, etc. just to wrap my mind around some of the details….BUT we have been so amazingly blessed by really digging into this book.

You see, at the heart of Revelation is the culmination of God’s love story to his people. He will not stop short of pursuing His people, revealing His love to them, warning them of the fate of the unrepentant, and judging the wicked. Reading this book has been an adventure to say the least. But Revelation 1:3 rings true. There are many blessing in store for those who read and take to heart the words of this book. If you knew a hurricane was going to hit your town soon, wouldn’t you prepare yourself and your family?

Well, imagine my surprise when my oldest Doodlebug (a precocious 6 year old), decided that since I was reading Revelation, he was going to also. To top things off, he turns to Chapter 12 to start and says, “Mommy this chapter is called,’ The Woman and the Dragon’”. YIKES!!! Here we go! What was my response?

I was tempted to back away (slowly…LOL) and tell him all the “reasons” to avoid this book until he was older…the same reasons people had given me. However, when I sheepishly said we would talk about it later, he proceeded to read it himself. Hmmmm…what’s a mom to do?! Ban him from reading it? Of course not!

So….I am preparing to go through this book with my son. I will try my best to explain things in a way that are age appropriate for him, and to help him see the heart of the Gospel in Revelation. Would you consider doing the same? If you have not personally gone through the book of Revelation, I would encourage you to do so. There is a blessing for all those who read, hear, and keep the words of this book.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank you that every word in your holy Word is useful for teaching and instruction in Godly living. Thank you for the prophecies of the past and those that are yet to come. Lord, when we read your Word, I pray that you would give us wisdom and understanding so that we can comprehend the vast greatness of your character, your love, and your plan for all mankind. May we not shrink away from reading the “hard stuff”…and teaching it to our children. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

New Mercies

 Lamentations 3:22-23

Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for His mercies (compassions) never fail. They are new every morning; Great is your faithfulness!

Thoughts:
This is a promise we can bank on! God's mercies are new each day because He gives enough for that day. I can definitely think of several times in the past week where I've fallen short. We can be short with our spouses, impatient with our kids, quick to get frustrated with others or whatever it may be at the moment, but God offers us what we need. We must depend on His mercies day-by-day-- just like the manna in the wilderness was given one day at a time.

Challenge:

Am I allowing sin to hinder me in any way?

Am I forgetting or acknowledging that God’s mercies are shown to me each day?

Prayer:
Father, We thank you for your perfect love. We ask that you would help us in our times of frustration and impatience- that you would fill us up with what we need because on our own, we will fail. Help us to live in Your forgiveness and grace and to extend it to others we encounter each day!

The Diamond is Coming!!

(Google Image)

I love the honesty that shows up on the posts of Parakaleo.  Just moms trying to sort this “mom” thing out.  It is often reflected within the posts of how we get into a routine with our parenting.  Each day seems like the last.  We even can find ourselves having a little pity party and licking our wounds about what “isn’t” or equally disheartening about what “is.”
I have been reminded of the analogy of our oldest as she was waiting for her proposal from her Prince Charming.  Our son in law had come to both my husband and I individually and asked permission to marry our firstborn.  However, he is a planner and had to get all the circumstances just right.
Michelle got ready every day thinking with each meeting of her boyfriend, she might come home with a beautiful ring, representing his love and commitment to their lives together.  As one day ran into the next, Michelle got anxious and disappointed.  She came home day after day disheartened that Cole had not proposed.
I have the honor as her mom to hear exactly what she was mulling over.  She would say things like, “maybe he doesn’t really love me” or “if he can’t make up his mind, maybe we should break up.”  My responses had to be casual and yet try to get her to see she didn’t know the whole picture.
As I have shared their story you know she and Cole did get engaged and married.
The point is this…the diamond ring was coming!
As we parent we may feel like nothing is changing. The children continue to argue, the bills stack up, you are spending more time in the pediatrician’s office than you do in the park.  You are making meals, taxing kids…
Can I encourage you moms with this thought…The Diamond is coming!  It may seem “late” or you may question “His” love.  Don’t give up! Don’t break up! Don’t even question His love!  The Diamond is coming!
Galatians 6: 9
So let’s not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up, or quit.

Deuteronomy 10

v. 14  To the Lord your God belong
the heavens
even the highest heavens
the earth and everything in it.

v. 15  Yet the Lord set His affection on your forefathers
and loved them
He chose you,
Their descendants…

v. 16  Circumcise your hearts…

v. 17 For the Lord your God is God of gods
and  Lord of lords
the great God
mighty and awesome
who shows no partiality
and accepts no bribes.

v. 20  Fear the LORD your GOD
serve Him
Hold fast to HIM
Take your oaths in His name

v. 21  HE IS YOUR PRAISE,
He is Who performed for you
Those great and awesome wonders
You saw with your own eyes.
